RACHMANINOV. Symphonic Dances, Op. 45. * Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14. Aleko—Intermezzo.
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra / Lorin Maazel. DG Compact Disc ® 410 894-2. From 410 894-1 (3/84).
The crispness and lightness of rhythm as well as the delicacy of texture, and the precision of ensemble, all come out the more markedly on CD. Maazel is a fresh and individual interpreter of Rachmaninov, but when the Symphonic Dances have recently arrived in two rival versions on LP (Rattle/HMV, Ashkenazy/Decca), both more persuasive and passionate than this, I would suggest waiting. Recorded in the Philharmonic in Berlin—not necessarily an ideal recording venue—the sound is warmer and fuller than has often been accorded to Karajan with this orchestra in recent years. E.G.
